\u201cGrandma,\u201d he said softly, his voice breaking, \u201cplease read it.\u201d
\nI opened the envelope slowly. Inside was a stack of papers and a letter resting on top. The handwriting was neat, unfamiliar.
\nMy vision blurred with tears, but I kept reading.
\nI looked up at my grandson. He was watching me carefully, his eyes red, just like when he was little and tried not to cry.<\/p>\n

\u201cKeep going,\u201d he whispered.
\nI swallowed and read the last lines.
\nMy hands dropped to my lap.<\/p>\n

\u201cPapers?\u201d I asked, barely able to speak.
\nHe nodded. \u201cGuardianship. She signed it over years ago\u2026 she just never told you. I waited until I was old enough to come back on my own.\u201d<\/p>\n

A thousand emotions rushed through me\u2014anger, relief, grief\u2014but above all, something steady and warm began to rise.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou came back,\u201d I said.
\nHe knelt beside me, just like he used to when he wanted comfort as a child.<\/p>\n

\u201cI never left,\u201d he said quietly. \u201cNot really.\u201d<\/p>\n

I cupped his face, older now but still my boy, and pulled him into a tight embrace. For the first time in years, the house didn\u2019t feel empty.
