\nA woman came into the restaurant one rainy evening with two young kids. They looked exhausted, cold, and hungry.<\/p>\n
She stood near the entrance for several minutes before finally approaching me.<\/p>\n
\u201cExcuse me,\u201d she whispered. \u201cDo you have any leftovers? Anything you were going to throw away?\u201d<\/p>\n
Her children stared at the plates on the tables.<\/p>\n
I looked at them, then at the kitchen.<\/p>\n
I couldn\u2019t bring myself to give them scraps.<\/p>\n
So I brought out three hot meals.<\/p>\n

Everyone froze.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat happened?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n

Inside was a handwritten note.<\/p>\n
It said:<\/p>\n
\u201cYou probably won\u2019t remember me, but twelve years ago, I was the waitress who helped a frightened little girl and her mother when they had nowhere to go.\u201d<\/p>\n
I stopped breathing.<\/p>\n
The woman from the night before had been that little girl.<\/p>\n
She had recognized me.<\/p>\n
Years ago, when I was working at another restaurant, I had given a hungry mother and her daughter a meal. I had forgotten about it almost immediately.<\/p>\n

At the bottom was one final sentence:<\/p>\n
\u201cPlease accept the management position at my newest restaurant. I want you to run it.\u201d<\/p>\n
I stared at the letter through tears.<\/p>\n
The woman hadn\u2019t come back for leftovers.<\/p>\n
She had come back to remind me that kindness doesn\u2019t disappear.<\/p>\n
Sometimes it travels quietly through the years\u2026<\/p>\n
