My heart dropped. Years of silence, anger, and unanswered questions rushed back all at once\u2014but none of it mattered in that moment. She was shaking, her eyes pleading.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat happened?\u201d I asked, guiding her inside.
\n\u201cThey lost everything,\u201d she said between sobs. \u201cThe house\u2026 the money\u2026 everything. And Mom\u2014she\u2019s been asking about you. A lot.\u201d<\/p>\n

I didn\u2019t know what to feel. Part of me remembered the night I left\u2014the cold words, the slammed door, the feeling of being unwanted. Another part of me saw my little sister, no longer little, carrying the weight of it all alone.<\/p>\n

\nSilence filled the room. Years had passed, but somehow the pain was still fresh\u2014just buried.<\/p>\n

\nShe nodded. \u201cFor now. But they need help.\u201d<\/p>\n

I looked at her\u2014really looked at her. She had grown up without me, just like I had learned to live without them. But here she was, standing in front of me, still choosing me.<\/p>\n

That meant something.
